Measuring Muscle Strength Provides Insights Regarding Weakness in Older Adults with COPD and Stroke

September 30, 2020 - Amsterdam, NL – Isokinetic dynamometry is a major tool in the measurement of muscle strength in the fields of sports medicine, orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation and exercise physiology. Its use in older individuals now extends far beyond orthopedics to such conditions as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and stroke. In a collection of articles published in Isokinetics and Exercise Science , experts address its validity, reliability and responsiveness in older adults.

New Nanodevice Could Use Solar Energy to Produce Hydrogen

June 10, 2020 - Amsterdam, NL – Solar energy is considered by some to be the ultimate solution to address the current energy crisis and global warming and the environmental crises brought about by excessive consumption of fossil fuels. However, this clean and inexhaustible energy source is difficult to capture and store. In a novel study, scientists propose using solar energy to produce hydrogen by splitting water, reports Biomedical Spectroscopy and Imaging.

Nutritional Management of Patients with COVID-19 Disease

May 1, 2020 - Ancona, Italy – COVID-19 disease is characterized by serious clinical manifestations which could require urgent hospitalization. Prolonged hospitalization, with catabolism and immobilization, induces a decrease in weight and muscle mass which can result in sarcopenia, a condition that impairs respiratory and cardiac function, worsening the prognosis.

No Need to Steer Clear of Electric Cars If You Have a Pacemaker

April 7, 2020 - Amsterdam, NL – A study published in Technology and Health Care shows that four leading brands of e-cars do not trigger electromagnetic interference (EMI) with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED). CIEDs like pacemakers and defibrillators may malfunction when they are exposed to strong electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by powerful motors. While rare events, such errors could have serious consequences for patients. With the increasing use of electric-powered vehicles for public and private transport, there is a critical need to assess the potential risks for this population.
