This work provides an overview of market developments in the telecommunications sector, at the beginning of the nineties. There are two recurring elements in the overviews: ownership of transcontinental cables and satellite systems, and regulatory developments in the relevant countries. The growth in the Asia Pacific Region is the key driving factor behind its telecommunications development. One recent estimate states that Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand will more than double their telecommunications spending from US$20 billion last year to US$48 billion in 1996. The studies in this work concern the Asia Pacific Connections, including connections within the region as well as such with Europe and North America. A new aspect is that leading telecommunications operators from the Asia Pacific Region now are investing in Europe and the United States and, of course, the reverse.
