Journal of X-Ray Science and Technology Adds Embedded 3D Image Videos to Enhance Visualization of Medical Procedures

November 21, 2016 - The current issue of the Journal of X-Ray Science and Technology now features 3D imaging embedded within its articles for the first time. Use of this digital and multimedia technique enhances the value of five papers, which focus on kidney injuries, tumor diagnoses, and dental medicine. Videos of these rotating 3D images can be accessed directly, allowing readers to examine them in detail and gain deeper understanding of the diagnoses, prognoses, and treatments described.

New Analysis Shows Hexvix®/Cysview® Significantly Prolongs Time To Progression Of Bladder Cancer

April 29, 2016 - Photocure ASA (OSE: PHO), is pleased to announce publication of a new analysis demonstrating that Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC) with Hexvix/Cysview significantly prolonged time to disease progression and showed a trend in the reduction of the rate of progression in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The data was published online in the April issue of the peer reviewed journal, Bladder Cancer.

Researchers Make Progress in Genomic Classification of Bladder Cancers

February 19, 2016 - The ability to map the human genome has transformed how scientists and researchers classify various cancers. In the past, cancer cells were examined through a microscope and their appearance, often enhanced with dyes or other agents, was used to categorize the type of cancer. Now, it is possible to extract the DNA or RNA from these cells and establish a classification according to the type and quantity of mutations, active and inactive genes, and other molecular characteristics. An article in the current issue of Bladder Cancer reports the results of a consensus meeting of experts in the field and describes the recent efforts to classify bladder cancers.

Conflicts with Teachers Are Risk Factor for School Shootings

August 27, 2014 - As part of the TARGET project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, researchers at Freie Universität Berlin conducted a systematic literature search of all the available studies dealing with school shootings. The aim of the analysis was to clarify which social dynamics in the social network of perpetrators can be observed in advance as playing an important role in school shootings. Up to now, researchers had assumed that bullying between peers and the social exclusion of the perpetrators were the most prominent factors in school shootings. This study shows, however, that in many cases conflicts with teachers seemed to be a decisive factor in the school shooting cases investigated.

New Technology Reveals Insights into Mechanisms Underlying Amyloid Diseases

July 11, 2014 - Amyloid diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, cataracts, and the spongiform encephalopathies, all share the common trait that proteins aggregate into long fibers which then form plaques. Yet in vitro studies have found that neither the amylin monomer precursors nor the plaques themselves are very toxic. New evidence using two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy has revealed an intermediate structure during the amylin aggregation pathway that may explain toxicity, opening a window for possible interventions, according to a report in the current issue of Biomedical Spectroscopy and Imaging.

Elevated Levels of Copper in Amyloid Plaques Associated with Neurodegeneration in Mouse Models of Alzheimer’s Disease

August 23, 2013 - Metals such as iron, copper, and zinc are important for many biological processes. In recent years, studies have shown that these nutritionally-essential metals are elevated in human Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains and some animal models of AD. Scientists are now exploring whether these metals are causing the neurodegeneration seen in AD or are indicative of other ongoing pathologic processes.

Breakthrough Study Opens Door to Broader Biomedical Applications for Raman Spectroscopy

February 21, 2013 - Raman spectroscopy has enabled incredible advances in numerous scientific fields and is a powerful tool for tissue classification and disease recognition, although there have been considerable challenges to using the method in a clinical setting. Scientists have now demonstrated the advantages of wavelength-modulated Raman spectroscopy, opening the door to wider biomedical and clinical applications such as real-time assessment of tissues during surgery. This study is published in Biomedical Spectroscopy and Imaging.

Low-Arsenic Rice Discovered in Bangladesh Could Have Major Health Benefits

February 18, 2013 - Millions of people worldwide are regularly exposed to arsenic through drinking water and eating rice grown in soil and water containing high amounts of arsenic. Long-term exposure can lead to the development of different types of cancer as well as serious cardiovascular, neurological, and other health problems. Scientists have now identified aromatic rice from Bangladesh that has far lower arsenic concentrations than found in non-aromatic rice. The other important benefit is that it contains higher amounts of selenium and zinc. The discovery is reported in Biomedical Spectroscopy and Imaging.

MicroRNAs Present Exciting Opportunities for Cancer Therapy and Diagnosis

December 20, 2012 - As many as 50 percent of all human protein-coding genes are regulated by microRNA (miRNA) molecules. While some miRNAs impact onset and progression of cancer, others can actually suppress the development of malignant tumors and are useful in cancer therapy. They can also serve as potential biomarkers for early cancer detection. In a new issue of Cancer Biomarkers, investigators report on non-coding miRNAs as appealing biomarkers for malignancy.
