This publication describes the role of informatics in developing primary care across an enlarged Europe. Two aspects are covered in detail, the first topic is (1) Informatics to support the delivery of more effective primary clinical care in enlarged Europe especially with major citizen movement into other countries and other health systems. The second topic deals with (2) using routinely collected data for quality improvement, health service planning and research. There is balance of information from countries in transition and more developed ones informing how primary care informatics may encourage the achievement of these aims. The contributions cover the spectrum from countries embarking on the computerisation of primary care to those who have advanced integrated systems.
